Data sovereignty means a Nation controls how its own information is collected, stored, used, and shared — rather than that control sitting with an outside government, company, or platform by default.

For First Nations, this extends the same principle of self-determination that already applies to land and governance into the digital systems Nations increasingly rely on: membership records, land and resource data, health and social information, and community communications.
